Spectrum Big Band has established a veritable reputation as a first class big band, playing music from a wide range of styles including big band favourites, jazz, swing, latin and rock.

Spectrum was originally established as the Canberra City Big Band in the early 80s under John Helgesen. At the time, this was the first community big band in Canberra, and the first youth big band to perform at the Merimbula Jazz Festival (1986), and was later renamed KickBrass. It disbanded in 1992 but was reformed in 1997 as Spectrum under Glen Rogers, changing its name to Spectrum Big Band in 2007 under Rod Mason OAM.

Today it has over 20 members and performs regularly around town at corporate functions, jazz festivals, community events and private parties. It regularly combines with Jumptown Swing to bring back that feel of the swingin' 40s!

Phil Johansen is the Bass Trombone player in the Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon. He hails from the Northern Territory and has played trombone professionally for the last 12 years. Early musical experience in the Northern Territory came from playing with groups including the Darwin Youth Jazz Big Band, the Darwin Symphony Orchestra and various pub bands; however his primary growth was with the 7th Military District Band (now Australian Army Band Darwin). Full time Computer and Printer Technician, and part time musician around Darwin, his professional playing career began in 1999 when he left the Northern Territory to join the Australian Regular Army as a trainee musician. Over his time spent with the service he has lived in several locations around Australia and participated in concerts, parades and events varying from royal arrivals to playing the Olympic flame through central Queensland. He has also spent time training Army recruits and representing the Australian Army as a competitive shooter. He believes that musical enjoyment and promoting job satisfaction through training and personal growth are fundamental to a good career as a defence musician, and with his varied experience in the defence force he hopes to bring a balanced management style to Spectrum in 2012.

Born in Canberra, Adam Matthews took an early interest in music learning the guitar for a number of years then taking up the saxophone in 1990. Having been educated at Radford College he was accepted to the Canberra School of Music in 1996 to study jazz saxophone. During this time he worked as a freelance musician locally and internationally playing styles ranging from jazz, latin and rock, as well as performing with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra and various chamber music ensembles.Upon joining the Australian Army Band Corps in 2002, he was posted to the Australian Army Band Sydney where, under the leadership of Major Geoff Grey, he was featured in the ARIA nominated recording Camouflage, and Salute to the Aussie Digger which both raised more than $60,000 for Legacy. In 2002 he was deployed to East Timor and later to the Solomon Islands in 2004 to help maintain morale and esprit de corps for Australian troops. In 2003 the Unit was awarded a Chief of Defence Force Commendation for services to both the Australian Defence Force and the wider community. In 2006 he was posted to the Band of the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment in Townsville where he was promoted to Corporal. The following year was posted to the Band of the Royal Military College taking up the role of saxophone section leader. In June 2009 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.Adam has performed and recorded as a soloist on alto, tenor, baritone and soprano saxophones and has led various big bands and small ensembles.

Steve Carter has being playing trumpet professionally since 1991 when he enlisted into the Australian Army Band Corps at the age of seventeen. In this capacity he has played in many and varied ensembles, citing Big Band as his preferred style of music. He has provided musical support for many famous Australian and international artists, including James Morrison, Marcia Hines, Rhonda Burchmore, Olivia Newton-John and Dionne Warwick and has performed at Anzac Day Services throughout Australia and in Gallipoli. He is a recognised jazz musician, particularly in the Canberra area, and leads the big band with authority and determination.

Rod Mason OAM 2007-2008

Rod Mason was the Bandmaster of the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Project and Recruiting Manager for the Australian Army Band Corps during his time with Spectrum. He has produced numerous recording projects designed to assist the community whilst fulfilling his ADF Public Relations role. His successful Commonwealth funded projects range from producing and directing a jazz recording raising funds for the Homeless, to writing and producing an Australian history audio CD to assist in the education of young Australians to raise funds for Legacy. On Australia Day 2008, Rod was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for meritorious service as the Australian Defence Force Academy Band Sergeant Major and as a member of the Australian Army Band Corps.Rod still finds time to tutor and perform saxophone in various ensembles throughout Australia.

Graeme Reynolds 1999-2000

Graeme has been a professional trumpet player since 1978 covering all musical genres including symphony and chamber orchestras, Big Bands, Rock/Blues/Funk/Latin bands, backing international artists, stage shows, brass and military bands, as well as soloist for concert recitals and weddings. Graeme is a former member of the RMC Band and the Canberra Symphony Orchestra. He is a current member of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and has recently returned from London where he was on an international exchange with the Royal Artillery Band. He was Music Director for the Spectrum Show Band (as it was then named) from 1999 to 2000.Graeme is currently posted to Australia Army Band Adelaide.

HISTORY

Within the Canberra City Band organisation there is Spectrum Big Band, comprising the traditional instruments of trumpet, trombone and saxophone plus rhythm section and vocalists. It plays a wide range of big band music for both dancing and listening, from the swing of the '30s and '40s through to funk, Latin and the latest jazz charts. Established in 1998 under the leadership of Sergeant Glenn Rogers, it has continued to draw on the expertise of The Band of the Royal Military College, Duntroon, with virtually all of its Musical Directors having come from that body. Spectrum plays for balls and concerts and appears regularly at interstate jazz festivals. These have included festivals held in Manly, Thredbo, Wagga Wagga, Moruya and Merimbula where they were well received by jazz devotees. Among the prominent artists it has backed are jazz musicians Dan Barnett and John Morrison and singer Carl Risely of Australian Idol fame. In 2007 it won the Jazz Section of the National Eisteddfod under the leadership of Warrant Officer Rod Mason, OAM. Although not continuous, the Canberra City Band has had an association with big band/dance orchestras going back many years. From 1931-1937 the Band Master was Les Pogson. He had played in or led big bands in Albury, Sydney and possibly Britain. Over the many years that he was in Canberra he led what were considered the citys most popular dance bands and in 1948 recorded in the 2CA studios Jubilee Stomp, a Duke Ellington big band arrangement and one of the first jazz recordings made in Canberra. He played frequently at the Albert Hall, then Canberras main social centre with the largest dance floor. Pogsons orchestras varied in size according to the requirements of the occasion but they were known to often exceed twenty players. To raise funds for the band during the Depression years Pogson ran Canberra City Band Balls at the Albert Hall. On those occasions the Canberra City Band, augmented with saxophone players from his orchestra, played dance band arrangements especially written by Pogson. For a ball held on 29 May 1936 it was reported that the band consisted of 35 players! In 1983 the Youth Division of the band formed the Capital City Big Band under the leadership of John Helgesen, son of the then Musical Director Keith. It was later to change it name to Kickbrass and continued through to the early 1990s. Virtually all of this bands members were still at school and this placed some restrictions on where and when they could play but there were appearances at the Canberra Jazz Club, Southern Cross Club, and Canberra Festival and at the Merimbula Jazz Festivals in 1986 and 1990. While youth big bands from Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne and elsewhere are now a common feature of the Merimbula festival, the Capital City Big Band was the first youth big band to appear on the program. A number of the people associated with this band went on to become professional jazz/studio musicians in Sydney. A second big band also operated within the organization at this time. As the Capital City Big Band had an age limit of 25, the senior members in 1991 decided to start their own, under the leadership of Colin Fischer. Entitled The Canberra City Stage Band, it won the Open Jazz Band Section of the National Eisteddfod that year and continued playing at balls up until Fischer retired in 1993. The senior members regarded it as a side line interest and it was never as specialized, serious or as busy as the previously established junior big band.While interest has fluctuated over the years The Spectrum Big Band currently caters to those members and public who want to play, dance or listen to this style of music.
